Dr Mathews Phosa
Dr Mathews Phosa was born in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga on 1 September 1952. He was educated at Maripi High School in Acornhoek following which he obtained a B Proc (University of the North) (Turfl oop) in 1977. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law by Boston University (USA) in 1995. Dr Phosa established the first black owned law practice in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga in 1981 and worked as a partner until 1985 when he was forced into exile.
While in exile, Dr Phosa underwent political and military training in the former East Germany, after which he became the Regional Commander for Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) the then military wing of the African National Congress (ANC) in Mozambique.
He was one of four ANC members (together with President Jacob Zuma and former Justice Minister Penuell Maduna) to be sent back to South Africa in 1990 to start the negotiation process with the former government.
